COVID-19: Major US and UK Airlines Waive Change Fees

British Airways A350-1000

Last week, we reported that JetBlue is waiving all change and cancellation fees for new flight bookings. With the Coronavirus Disease continuing to spread, there are already more than 110 confirmed cases in the US and over 50 in the UK. Responding to this situation, all major airlines in the US, and the largest carrier in the UK, have followed JetBlue in waiving change fees.

American Airlines

American Airlines announced they will waive change fees for up to 14 days prior to travel, for customers who purchase travel between 1st March and 16th March. The waiver is available for any of American’s published fares.

This waiver applies to all American Airlines flights. Note that award tickets are not included.

Bookings made through travel agencies are also not included. For flight departures in more than 2 days, a free-refund still applies.

United Airlines

For United tickets issued 3rd March through 31st March 2020, customers will be permitted to change, free of charge, to a flight of equal or lesser value up to 12 months from the original ticket issue date.

If the new flight is priced higher, the customer may change for no fee but must pay the fare difference. If the customer decides to cancel their flight, they can retain the value of the ticket to be applied to a new ticket, without fee, for travel up to 12 months from the original ticket issue date.

This applies to: all tickets, all fare types, all destinations, all points-of-sale and all travel dates available for sale, provided the ticket number starts with 016.

No minimum stay. No blackout dates.

Fares, fees, rules and offers are subject to change without notice. Seats are capacity-controlled and may not be available on all flights or days. Fares are nonrefundable, except during the first 24 hours after purchase. Other restrictions may apply.

  1. AMERICAN AIRLINES – NOTE A TICKET FOR A FLIGHT USING AWARD TRAVEL MILEAGE – , THEY ARE CHARGING A FEE TO SOME FREQUENT FLYERS TO HAVE THE MILEAGE PUT BACK INTO THEIR ACCOUNTS DUE TO THE SITUATION WITH THE CORONAVIRUS. SO THEY ARE NOT CHARGING A CHANGE FEE ON MOST PURCHASED TICKETS BUT YET CHARGING US FREQUENT FLYERS TO PUT OUR MILES BACK INTO OUR ACCOUNTS. POOR BUSINESS. GUESS HAVE TO CHANGE AIRLINES.
