Future Long-Haul Routes
While Singapore Airlines holds the current record for the longest commercial flight, it is not the longest non-stop flight ever flown. That distinction was achieved in March 2020 when Air Tahiti Nui operated a non-stop flight from Papeete, Tahiti, to Paris, spanning an impressive 9,765 miles. This was made possible due to pandemic-related restrictions that bypassed the usual stop in Los Angeles.
However, this record is expected to be surpassed by Qantas’ Project Sunrise, launching in 2025. The airline plans to operate non-stop routes between Sydney and London (10,573 miles) and Sydney and New York (9,950 miles). These flights will use specially configured Airbus A350-1000 aircraft designed for ultra-long-haul operations.
Project Sunrise has been years in the making, with Qantas conducting trial flights in 2019 using Boeing 787-9 aircraft. These flights, which included non-stop journeys from New York to Sydney and London to Sydney, demonstrated the feasibility of such ambitious routes. The flights lasted over 19 hours, with limited passengers and cargo to optimize performance.
In addition to Qantas, Turkish Airlines is also exploring direct ultra-long-haul flights. While a non-stop Istanbul–Sydney route (14,967 km) is planned for 2026 with their future Airbus A350-1000 fleet, interim direct routes, such as Istanbul–Melbourne (via Singapore) and Istanbul–Sydney (via Kuala Lumpur), have already been introduced.
These upcoming flights highlight the aviation industry’s pursuit of longer, more efficient routes, leveraging advancements in aircraft technology to connect distant cities like never before.
