  1. Hi Sam,
I’d like advice on the Etihad move up a class by bidding.
I may be flying OW SGN – JFK next March … right now the fares are around USD800 in Y and $2800 in J. What kind of bid works here ? I would be OK to make a bid of $1000 which will still bring it in much under the published J fare. Do you have any general pointers as to how much is usually needed for this to happen?
    Thanks
    Tim

    1. Tim, I certainly think $2800 is too high from SGN-JFK. Did you have a look at other airlines such as JAL, Turkish or Qatar? Have a look at roundtrip fares as well it may be significantly cheaper.

For the bid upgrade, i think it will cost at least $1000+ for AUH -JFK sector and add a few hundres on SGN-AUH sector. I would look into what other alternatives or depart from another city.

    2. Thanks … I can probably make it back from SGN on miles.

Now have another challenge as going to a wedding in S India, right between Christmas and New Year. I found a mileage ticket JFK CAI JED COK dep Dec 24 .. only route available but will now need to get back right around Dec31-Jan2. Biz traffic is way down then and Y is usually up. Etihad quotes around USD800 for Y and 2100 for J. My hunch is that they will need u/g’s then rather than looking for them, so possibly not such a large amount needed. BUT, On the Expedia website, by looking at the flights, where they give you access to the seatplans, the flights look amazingly empty. A B777-300 with the back two Y cabins totally available. If I knew I could get 3 or even 4 seats in Y, then that would be as good as an u/g. Etihad has a ‘sale’ going on til Sept 9 (in the US at least) so I would have to move before then to get those fares.

      What do you think ?

    3. NEVER take an empty seat map as a prediction. They will be filling up usually from 8 weeks to departure date…Given the low business traffic, it would be helpful if you have an elite status to try for an Op Upgrade.
