Green Africa Airways, Nigeria’s Lagos-based airline, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for 50 A220-300 aircraft. This is the largest A220 order from the African continent.

This order was signed during the Singapore Airshow.

“Together with Airbus, we are incredibly proud to announce the largest order ever for the A220 from the African continent.”

Babawande Afolabi, Founder & CEO of Green Africa Airways

“The unique characteristics of the A220 will allow the airline to unlock destinations and route pairs, that previously would have been considered non-viable. We look forward to our partnership with Green Africa and to accompany their development with the most efficient aircraft in its class.”

The A220 is an aircraft built for the 100-150 seat market. With its range over 3,500nm, it offers airlines greater flexibility in operation. Many longer city pair sectors with thinner demand can be sustained with A220.

The Pratt & Whitney’s PW1500G geared turbofan engines offer a 20 percent lower fuel burn per seat, compared to previous generation aircraft.

At the end of January 2020, the A220 had accumulated 658 orders.

  1. It will be interesting to see if this comes to fruition. 50 A220s and they have a similar number of 737 MAX8s on option too, it seems.
Nigeria’s record of running successful airlines gives me serious doubts about this project.
