During a recent interview with FT, The president of Emirates, Tim Clark said their current fleet of A380s, which will cease to be manufactured from next year, would continue to play an important part in the airline’s future. He expects to have all their planes flying in two years’ time, including their fleet of A380s.
“We’re not getting rid of any of them apart from I think three that are coming out and nine 777s that were scheduled to come out this year.”

He said the carrier is planning to fully deploy all their aircraft in the summer of 2022, based on their outlook for a recovery in air travel to take up to two years.
“The A380 has a place in the Emirates international network on the scale it had before. Albeit not today or fully next year, but the year after I think there will be a place for it and I think it is going to be extremely popular.”

Sir Tim dismissed speculations that Emirates would permanently decommission a large portion of its 115-strong A380 fleet.
“At the moment, I’ve got 115 sitting there. We’ve always known that up until that point in time . . . in 2022 there are going to be a number that will have to go into long-term storage,” he said.
According to Bloomberg, Emirates plans to take three more of the double-deckers before the end of their fiscal year next March; however they dont want the remaining five, according to people who have asked not to be named as the talks are private. Airbus is proposing a deferral of deliveries or payments, the people said.
Emirates said it remains “in regular dialog with Airbus” regarding fleet requirements and doesn’t comment on commercial discussions. Airbus declined to comment, saying talks with customers are confidential.

Mabey they should make an a380 freighter
There are going to be so many mothballed i hope rather than smashed up for parts for airlines still using them, what about cargo transformation ?
Air FRANCE i read is getting rid of all of them, not to be re-seated/upholstered cabin on some as predicted and now all to be mothballed temporary and maybe even scrapped if cannot find a buyer? Same with Lufthansa half gone for good ,though Lufthansa Tecknik is looking into cargo transformation builds?
BA? Not sure whats gonna happen with their fleet? Some will start flying and then the rest to join as soon as market demand rises ,I HOPE! NO to scrappage and their Dreamliner on every route there is most likely! Sort of thing they would do! A350’s? Well they can have those Etihad ones re-painted and added to their fleet earlier in serial number or added numbers as they have retired B747’s alot earlier than planned, maybe all?? Who knows….Also will they still honour their A350 buys??? etiahd seems to be backing out?
So if Emirates scrap aload,i am sure they can replace most back by buying up scrapped Air France and others or even take back on their mothballed ones that maybe are not for scrappage? Afterall even the ones going to the scrapyard like the first Singapore was a joke as the aircraft was ,what not even 12 years old at the time…. crazy? Did it pay off its cost to buy??
He’s one major ignorant, wasn’t he getting retired anyways? His statements are worthless.
I love the A380 but it has to go this decade.
You don’t like this majestic airliner, if you want it to be scrapped ! You are talking rubbish. This A380 bashing is really annoying !
From a personal point of view I hope they are kept for awhile yet, as I love them, and for 5 years I have been flying with Emirates to Australia via Dubai of course.
With the 380s for me it is the beginning of the luxury trip in business, and coming home is a great way to finish.
Well done Emirates. Forward thinking is the way to go.
I’m a HUGE fan of the A380, the most enjoyable, comfortable ship in the sky.
Emirates are always my first choice of airline, I’ve never had a bad experience flying with them.
Living in Spain but an Australian I try to fly home as much as the pocket allows me.
Hope Emirates starts up the route ASAP.
Steve
The global slowdown because of Covid 19 would definitely lead to shrinking of travel demands. But what are the predictions about the pandemic to go and the recovery situation in different regions, changes in movements of corporate bodies and travellers? People love to fly Emirates, and on A380s, especially for long distance destinations.
The bloody liar
By denying this, Sir Tim Clark regains my respect! I ‘m sure the A380s Emirates will be able to find their customers and I want to board these beauties as soon as the situation is normal again. Long life to Emirates.
You’re being a knucklehead for no reason. Does anyone crazy to dismiss a large fleet of A380 like emirates?. Sir Tim is telling A380 is facing little trouble to carry on in Covid situation and will be good after. Even other airlines have halted their A380 operations.
