On Thursday, 7th April, a DHL Boeing 757 veered off the runway and split into parts after an emergency landing at San Jose Juan Santamaría International Airport, Costa Rica.
The Boeing 757, with registration HP-2010DAE, was operating a cargo flight from San Jose Juan Santamaria to La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City when it was forced to return to its departure airport due to an emergency.
As reported by the Delfino, the crew declared an emergency and requested to return while they were flying over the San Carlos area. Shortly the aircraft entered into a holding pattern to dump fuel before returning. However, on landing the aircraft didn’t come to stop and veered off the runway and broke apart.
As seen in the videos shared on the internet, the 757 veered off the runway and broke into two parts.
The Fire Department’s spokesman, Joseu Lara confirmed that the aircraft was transporting cargo material and had reported hydraulic problems in the air.
Two crew members were onboard the aircraft and both are reported to be safe without any serious injuries. The airport is temporarily closed until further notice.
Whoa, that is a serious crash landing. While it is not reported what effect the hydraulic problems were causing, it is not clear if the landing gear is down or other issues the aircraft was having.
If it had not traveled into that ditch perhaps the breakup would not have been as severe.
Most likely an air-frame write off.
