Atlas Air B767 Dramatic In-Flight Engine Surge Scene

Yesterday, an Atlas Air B767 performed an emergency landing at Honolulu, Hawaii after suffering an in-flight engine shut down.

The aircraft in question is a 28.5 year old Boeing 767-300, registration N649GT, it was performing flight 5Y-8585 from Honolulu, Hawaii to Guam.

According to the AvHerald, the aircraft took off at runway 08R and during the initial climb the crew declared an emergency on the tower frequency. They reported a right-hand engine failure, due to repeated engine surges/compressor stalls, with the engine emitting bangs and streaks of flame.

The aircraft stopped its climb at 2000 ft and the engine was shut down after the crew performed a severe engine damage checklist. The crew requested an ILS approach to runway 08L, they then resumed their climb and reached 2900 feet before landing safely on runway 08L 30 minutes after departure.
