US Travel Advisory: 116 Countries Added to ‘Do Not Travel’ List

The United States has added 116 countries to its ‘Level 4: Do Not Travel’ list, citing a “very high level of COVID-19”. The recommendations, which now apply to 80% of countries worldwide, are not mandatory and do not ban travel by US citizens.

In light of the “unprecedented” risks, the Department of State has strongly recommended US citizens reconsider all travel abroad. The updated advisories take into account logistical factors, including in-country testing availability and current travel restrictions for US citizens. Prior to Tuesday, 34 out of about 200 countries were listed under Level 4.

Level 4 is the “highest advisory level due to greater likelihood of life-threatening risks”. The Department of State advises that US citizens do not travel to the country or to leave as soon as it is safe to do so.

Level 4 countries now include:

  • United Kingdom
  • France
  • Canada
  • Mexico
  • Germany
  • Egypt
  • Belgium
  • Turkey
  • Italy
  • Switzerland
  • Spain

Only 1 country is Level 1 with 16 countries on Level 2.
