Iceland’s PLAY Air to Launch Flights in June

New Icelandic carrier PLAY Air has begun ticket sales, with their first flight scheduled for June. Flying to seven destinations across Europe initially, PLAY will expand to the United States sometime in early 2022.

The airline has been formed in the wake of WOW Air’s collapse, with former executives partly founding PLAY. Operating on a similar low-cost model, PLAY will utilise three Airbus A321neo aircraft which are being leased from AerCap. These aircraft feature 192 seats in an all-Economy configuration.

PLAY’s inaugural flight, between Reykjavík and London Stansted, will be on 24th June and The airline’s seven initial destinations are:

  • London (from 23rd June)
  • Tenerife (from 28th June)
  • Berlin (from 1st July)
  • Alicante (from 12th July)
  • Paris (from 14th July)
  • Barcelona (from 15th July)
  • Copenhagen (from 21st July)

Fares for the four-times-weekly service are currently priced at around $50, with additional baggage and seat selection available for purchase.

Commenting on the launch, CEO Birgir Jónsson said “it’s brilliant to be able to open up Iceland to UK travellers”.

Iceland remains one of just 12 ‘Green List’ destinations under the United Kingdom’s travel restrictions. All travellers entering Iceland can enter the country quarantine-free if vaccinated, but must submit to testing.
