British Airways announces Boeing 747 retro livery
To celebrate their 100th anniversary, British Airways has announced they’ll be painting a Boeing 747 in a retro livery.
G-BYGC, a 20 year-old Rolls-Royce RB-211 powered Boeing 747-400, will be painted in British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) colors as British Airways’ predecessor, as seen in the image below.
From the 1964 – 1974 era of BOAC, the aircraft will hold onto the livery until it retires in 2023. More details about what this special aircraft contains and other celebratory figures are to be announced at a later date.
For those willing to view the aircraft, it will arrive at London Heathrow Airport on the 18th of February, 2019 from the paint hangar in Dublin. It’s first commercial flight will take place on the following day.
Chairman and CEO of British Airways, Alex Cruz, voiced his thoughts on the livery in the following statement:
“So many British Airways customers and colleagues have fond memories of our previous liveries, regularly sharing their photos from across the globe, so it’s incredibly exciting to be re-introducing this classic BOAC design.”
He finished off with:
“Our history has shaped who we are today, so our centenary is the perfect moment to revisit our heritage and the UK’s aviation landscape through this iconic livery.”
As well as this announcement, the airline has made it clear that no new aircraft such as their upcoming Airbus A350-1000s will receive any special livery fort this event. This particular 747 was chosen as it is a later variant of the same aircraft type that adorned the design when it commenced operations.
